ramp03-18-07-robohamletalt.jpgIf Ramp Chicago needed a poster boy it would be Scott Hansen—equal parts audio and visual, he executes both with finesse. As Tycho he’s a master of swirling, sun-drenched melodies and as the much-lauded graphic designer, ISO50, he’s equally stunning and mines a similar aesthetic. Having just shared a bill with Matmos, Tycho is at work on new material for Ghostly International, having recently released Past is Prologue on Merck records. Hansen will be performing and displaying artwork from his ISO50 guise, as well as his live set as Tycho.

You’ll regret it if you miss Chicago DJ, Mr. Automatic, a long-time veteran of collectives like Metropop Media, Retropop!, Boutique Sound and Iconoclast. He’ll be spinning an eclectic mix of downtempo, 60’s pop and disco. Also look out for our new resident DJ Liz Revision (a.k.a. Quantazelle), who recently appeared with a live set in January, as well as live video artist Spiderback, returning to Ramp Chicago with his distinct blend of synthesized visuals.

God is a DJ video

June 24th, 2006

This is an short video portraying God as a DJ who controls the outcome of a scene by mixing records. Kind of wish the music were less “cinematic” (it’s mainly an orchestral string-based composition turning into generic ad-house background music) and more dj-battle / breakdance / technical, but it’s fun anyway!

DJ Request Policy T-Shirt

June 24th, 2006

DJ Request Policy T-shirtSo you’re at the cool trendy club on a Thursday mixing in the sweet new white label your pal the label owner just handed you, when suddenly there’s an incessant tapping on your left shoulder. You look up and it’s a post-sorority, club-hopping, fashion-clueless Trixie grinning excitedly. “Can you play (retarded over-marketed pop song) by (retarded over-marketed pop sensation)!?” she says to you in that half-question / half-command tone.

All you need do is point to your shirt.

Assuming you’ve moved the button to the second box and Ms. Requestor is literate, she’ll glance down, force a polite grin of disgust and breeze off in a huff. Good work!

So a few hours later you find yourself at a grungily cool loft on the outskirts of town, the air thick with cigarette smoke, stale beer, and sweat. Crowds of uber-trendy hipsters are clustered around, and you’ve already gotten two trainspotters to call out your most obscure 12″ German imports. These people are on it. Thankfully that little check button is movable, and with a bit of quick maneuvering you’ve made a bunch of new friends and gotten to show off your inimitable record collection and impeccable taste. Check you out.

Tony Hawk’s Project 8 trailer released

June 22nd, 2006

The graphics look pretty cool–althought the tricks are kind of ordinary in the trailer (although the only way I can do any of them is virtually. :-D).

Flock: the browser for bloggers

June 20th, 2006

Flock is a “social browser” built on the Firefox code base, which integrates blogging, photo sharing with Flickr or Photobucket, “favorites” (a.k.a. bookmarks) using del.icio.us, and other collaborative features. I’ve been using it for a few days now and I’m really impressed with the functionality it brings to the browser environment. Yes, Firefox with a bunch of plugins comes pretty close, but it’s conceptually a very cool idea, and seems pretty stable so far (even though it’s in beta stage). Get it here.

Messenger bag that gives you superpowers…

June 19th, 2006

…or just makes it look that way! This cool army-green utility bag has a bright orange “High Voltage” warning strap, suggesting that passersby better think twice before invading your space.

I’ve had one of these for about three months now and have gotten tons of comments on it. While it’s not big enough for a laptop (but apparently that’s in the works for the company)It’s a good size for the essentials, plus a big of extra room for goodies you pick up along the way.

Buy the orginal cellphone–for way less than $3,995

June 18th, 2006

Originally launched in 1983 by Motorola, the first cellphone had a huge pricetag and a waiting list of thousands who were impressed with the ability to be contacted by phone where ever they might be, ignited the wireless communications craze. You can get your own for about 50 USD at, Retrobrick, a UK-based company who warns, in small print, that “these phones use the analogue phone system and will no longer work in the UK. They may work in some areas of the USA but American networks are reluctant to implement new analogue subscriptions.” I’m thinking these need to be modded and replaced with some modern cellephone guts. Maybe we’ll see one soon from a Make-reading enthusiast [via]

Gameboy Music Rockstars Destroy Chicago

June 14th, 2006

“The machines are small, the sound is gigantic, the scope is worldwide, the advance is unstoppable. Prepare your defenses.” That was the warning delivered to Chicagoans before 2 musicians armed only with Gameboys and a slew of high-energy, beat-heavy, unresistably-catchy chiptunes landed in the city. Includes pictures and links to videos and MP3s.
