true_flicker_candle-sm.pngHere’s a great example of why it’s good to get a second pair of eyes to look at something that you’re designing. Did they really have to put that little candle graphic right after the “i” there?

The Promoter’s Ordinance has been tabled, but Ben Joravsky at the Chicago Reader warns that it’s a tactical retreat, not a victory (Keep up the fight–or watch out at the Chicago Reader).

Daley had Schulter defer action on the bill to buy the time he needs to figure out how he has to rewrite it in order to pass something, if only to save face. Remember this is the mayor who forced the council to defer enacting the ban on smoking in restaurants and bars for two years to make sure it wouldn’t look as though he was compromising on his opposition to smoking bans.

Best bet for what gets changed? Look for Daley and company to cut the promoters’ fee. He’ll probably reword the language governing not-for-profits so PTA leaders don’t have to shell out $500 and get fingerprinted in order to throw a freaking fund-raising dance. Then they’ll try to figure out what they have to do to pare down the opposition from mid-size clubs like Metro and Martyrs’ and bring them into the fold. Independent and underground promoters won’t catch any breaks.

This Wednesday the Chicago City Council will vote on an ordinance that will effectively shut down smaller live events, such as the ones I promote and play at.

The “Event Promoters” ordinance requires any event promoter to have a license from the city of Chicago and liability insurance of $300,000, but that’s just the start:

* The definition of “event promoter” is so loosely defined it could apply to a band that books its own shows or a theater company that’s in town for a one-week run.
* “Event Promoter” must be licensed and will pay $500 – $2000 depending on expected audience size.
* To get the license, applicant must be over 21, get fingerprinted, submit to a background check, and jump over several other hurdles.
* This ordinance seems targeted towards smaller venues, since those with 500+ permanent seats are exempt.
* Police must be notified at least 7 days in advance of event.

Here’s a petition: http://savechicagoculture.org

If you’re in Chicago here’s where you can find your alderman:

So you’ve been dragged to lame bachelor parties before out in the suburbs featuring bored girls reluctantly jiggling their hormonally-induced womanly parts to 90s-era rock and overplayed hiphop, and you’ve thought to your enlightened self, “there must be a better sort of bachelor party–one that fully appreciates the hard work of talented women who not only love quality electronic music, but have dedicated their lives to sharing their passion for it in an environment that appreciates it.” Wist no longer–that sort of bachelor party is here.

The bachelor party for Andrew Lochhead (Detroit Underground, AndrewandAndrea) at Debonair ft. all girl DJs:

Kate Simko [Spectral Sound, Kupai Musika, Traum]
Gianna Hardt [Forte]
Kiddo [Abduction Radio]
Liz Revision [Ramp Chicago, subVariant, CreateDigitalMusic.com

Debonair Social Club
1575 N. Milwaukee Av
Chicago IL 60622

Andrew Lochhead has been a co-owner of Detroit Underground records since 2003, the label that has prominently featured on its releases such talent as Richard Devine, Modeselector, Phon.o, Kero, and Otto Von Schirach as well as becoming a veritable force in Detroit and Windsor ON as an event production company throwing not-to-miss parties.

This is a 21+ event.

Cost: $5
